CURE: Citizens United for Research in Epilepsy

CURE: Citizens United for Research in Epilepsy was founded by an impassioned mother whose daughter started having seizures when she was just seven months old. She lived out her entire childhood battling them, unsuccessfully, with scores of mind-numbing drugs, failed surgical procedures and ineffective dietary therapies.

Epilepsy is as prevalent and lethal as breast cancer but it remains an obscure, stigmatized, underestimated, misunderstood and grossly underfunded disorder. It is the second most common neurological disorder, affects one in one hundred Americans and claims 50 million victims world wide. One in twenty-six Americans will be diagnosed with epilepsy at some point within their lifetime.

Epilepsy is NOT a benign condition where you take a pill and everything is okay. People with epilepsy—and their families—live a lifetime of fear, pain, suffering and hardship.

CURE funds critical cutting edge research into a cure for epilepsy. Ninety-four cents of every dollar donated will go toward finding a cure. You can donate in Calvin Kolster's name by clicking the link below.

Calvin's story

My son Calvin was born six weeks early with significant neurological problems of unknown origin. When he turned two he was diagnosed with epilepsy, which eclipsed all other adversity he'd encountered. No drug or dietary treatment has completely controlled his seizures. I write about the challenges we encounter, and the great perspective we gain as a result. I post something every day in an effort to increase epilepsy awareness, dispel the myths, promote understanding and inspire empathy, all in hope of a cure.
